Purple Martin Greenway, Rutherford County, NC

​The Purple Martin Greenway is named for the Purple Martin on General Griffith Rutherford’s family crest. General Rutherford, who both the town and county are named after, was an officer in the Revolutionary War and led a group of militia against the Cherokee, destroying thirty-six villages in a campaign called the Rutherford Trace.
